Why Male House Finches Can Be Different Colors

House Finches are common at my feeders - especially this time of year.  They are relatively easy to observe as they seem to move slower than other birds at the feeder.  They also tend to stay at the feeder rather than grabbing a seed and jumping to another branch to crack it open and eat it.  Before listening to this (super short - under 2 minutes) podcast I had never noticed the difference in shades of red the male house finches have that they are varying shades of red!  And, so are the cardinals!
