Where does frost come from?

On the longest night of the year when the sun arose the garden and yard was covered in the first layer of frost for this winter.  And, being  a lover of understanding the ways of the earth I wondered what causes frost.  I probably learned somewhere along the way, but today I realized if I had I have forgotten..

Maybe you've wondered too?

It seems to have a lot to do with radiation and where the most of it is coming from.  So cool and beautiful.  Frost makes the earth here look like winter and I LOVE winter.
